Kevin Beazer
Regional Secretary - South West
- “It is a great honour to be elected as the
first South West Regional Secretary under the new Regional Structure. I look
forward to working with Matt Gillett, the Assistant Secretary and Fred
Simpson, as Chair.
-
- This will be a new beginning for all
constituencies in the CWU, and we now have a direct opportunity to mould the
future structure of our Union.
-
- We must endeavour to use the South West
Regional Committee as a vehicle to move our Union forward into the 21st
century. Consequently, It is my intention to build links and relationships
between Branches from all constituencies.
-
- To that end, this South West Regional Website
has been set up to share knowledge and experiences between the different
constituencies. By sharing information we can communicate the difficulties
our members face in the ever changing working environment, which will be
brought about through deregulation and globalisation of the market place.
-
- Obviously, we must ensure we defend and
promote our members’ pay and conditions in the traditional communication
businesses, which the Union has recognition in. However, we must recognise
that new recruitment challenges lay ahead of us, in particular the expanding
call centre industry.
-
- Government legislation has now given us the
opportunity to represent thousands of members on issues such as discipline
and grievances in business where Trade Unions have had no legal right to
represent in the past.
-
- It is a sad fact that even in the 21st
Century there are many unscrupulous employers who treat their staff with
contempt. We have just as big a role to play now as we have in the past in
representing workers rights.
-
- In conclusion, it must be our goal to recruit
and organise workers across the communications industry, and with the
support of Branches from all constituencies we will achieve our aims.”
