Matt Gillett – Assistant Secretary Matt
says “ I am proud to have been elected as Assistant Secretary to the new South
West Regional Committee and look forward to working with colleagues from all
branches in the three constituencies. My
Branch has been a keen supporter of introducing this structure and believes it
gives us great opportunities to build links and share knowledge and experience.
I believe that one of the biggest challenges facing us is in the area of recruitment and organisation. We must organise in the increasing number of non-traditional companies throughout the telecommunications and postal industry. Whilst the Employment Relations Act may not go as far as we might wish it is at least one of the first major pieces of positive legislation for Unions introduced for over twenty years. The new legal rights to representation in discipline and grievance offer potential protection for millions more members. The CWU, and the wider TUC, must grasp this opportunity to build throughout all the workplaces in this country. It is clear that there is still a burning desire amongst workers and for the representation and justice offered by Unions. Using the best of both traditional and modern methods we must make sure we reach these workers.”
